Dub Techno
Deep, spacious techno built on texture, decay and echo. Find classic Basic Channel stuff and more modern Dub techno records from Priori at SEVEN Berlin.
Dub techno grew out of Berlin in the early-to-mid 1990s, though its roots reach back to Jamaican dub production and the Detroit techno that arrived in Europe a few years earlier.
On the forefront Basic Channel, the label and production alias run by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, is the point of origin most people agree on. Releases on Basic Channel and its sister imprints, Cyrus, Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound, established the template: deep, pressurised tracks built around delay and space rather than drops.
The sound is defined less by what is there than by what is fading. Long reverb tails, lowend-heavy chords that bloom and dissolve, hi-hats buried in fog, kick drums that feel more like pressure changes than hits. A typical track moves slowly, shifting in texture rather than structure, the chords drifting in and out of the mix on long echo returns. On a proper system the bass is physical but never aggressive, more tidal than punishing. In a set it works as glue or as a slow descent, not often as a peak-time tool, though in the right room at the right moment it can be completely absorbing.
Dub techno is timeless and the Basic Channel catalogue still sounds considered rather than dated, and newer producers continue to find room inside the form without simply copying it. A good example is Richard Akingbehin's Kynant, which still works with Dub techno's most famous vocalist Paul St. Hilaire (Tikiman) and Priori adding elements from progressive trance to the mix.
At SEVEN we love the genres ourselves. In nearly every Staff Pick Crate you will find dub techno. The records here tend to be the ones that reward careful listening at home as much as they work on a floor, which is usually a decent sign.
