Progressive House

Progressive house grew out of the early 1990s UK scene, where producers and DJs were looking for tracks that run longer for a crowd that want to get rewarded for their patience.

Labels like Guerilla and Yoshitoshi Recordings were central early on, releasing records from artists such as Sasha, John Digweed, and the production duo Leftfield, who helped shape a sound that moved more slowly and deliberately than the harder house coming out of the US at the same time. Bedrock, the label Digweed eventually launched, became something of a reference point for the direction the genre would take through the late 90s and into the 2000s.

The music itself tends to operate on patience. Arrangements build across seven or eight minutes, sometimes more, layering subtle chord movements underneath a groove that stays relatively straightforward on the kick and bass. Filtering is used heavily, pulling elements in and out rather than adding new ones, so the tension comes from restraint rather than addition. Synth lines are often long and hypnotic, not flashy, and the whole thing tends to sit in a mid-tempo pocket. Somewhere between 126 and 135 BPM roughly. On a good system it rewards attention: there is always something moving at the edges, a pad shifting, a hi-hat pattern that opens up slowly. In a set it allows a DJ to take a room on a proper journey without losing momentum.

Today progressive house sits in an interesting position. Parts of it aged badly, particularly the more polished commercial end that drifted toward trance territory in the mid-2000s. But the rawer, deeper early material has held up well, and a younger generation of producers has reconnected with its original sound. At SEVEN we carry the ones that still sound like they mean it.
