Electro
Electro and techno trace back to the same early-80s Detroit moment. Kraftwerk and European synth-pop landed in Detroit via radio, especially due to the infamous radio host the Electrifying Mojo.
The genre's first true anthem arrived in 1982 with Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force's "Planet Rock," which fused Kraftwerk's melodies with the deep bassdrum of the Roland TR-808, rewiring it for the Bronx that was all about HipHop.
They shaped what became "classic electro" - crisp, syncopated drum-machine beats, pulsating basslines, vocoders and futuristic synth lines. The word "techno" itself actually surfaces first inside this electro milieu. Cybotron's 1984 track "Techno City" used it, and Man Parrish had already put "techno" in a track title as early as 1982. For a while electro and techno weren't even separate genres, just different words for the same emerging Detroit-meets-Kraftwerk sound.
The sound is built around that booming 808 kick and a fat snappy clap or snare. Synth leads are often melodic but clipped and heavily compressed carrying a metallic quality that feels synthetic by design rather than accident. Where techno chased the endless 4/4 groove, electro stayed loyal to the break — syncopated, funk-rooted, built for body movement. If you know how to dance to it.
Electro never went away, it just kept mutating alongside its Detroit sibling. Through the late 1980s and 90s, acts like Aux 88 pushed tempos up and basslines lower, colliding electro with Miami bass. Drexciya took it furthest, building an entire underwater mythology out of 808 grids, vocoder chatter and stark, alien sound design, released through Underground Resistance and later Clone. Until today these records are highly sought-after and got repressed (luckily) alot of times.
SEVEN carries electro because it's the sound of electronic music before it decided to specialize: funky, futuristic, and still capable of moving a room decades later.
