AKA Shrubs
Garrett David - full name Garrett David Shrigley - is a DJ and producer from Chicago, now based in Berlin. He also records and performs under the aliases Bell Boys (a collaborative project with Adam Rowe), Mystical Institute, and Shrubs.
Through the mentorship of Chez Damier and years spent behind the desk at Gramaphone Records, where he worked as house buyer and A&R, Shrigley developed an unmistakable style and a deep relationship with the Chicago underground. He co-founded the Queen! night at Smart Bar, where he holds a long-standing residency. That party - rooted in Chicago's queer-of-colour club history - shaped his sensibility as much as his record collection.
His productions sit across classic Chicago house, deep house, and acid house. The approach is meticulous and underground in attitude, with lush and skittery tracks that have appeared on labels including Courtesy of Balance, Smallville, and Residual. His 2016 EP "The Time" appeared on the French imprint Courtesy of Balance Recordings, featuring vocals from Lailah Reich and a co-production with Colin Johnson. Global Swing is his own label, which he owns and operates. Distributed by Subwax, the label also runs an associated channel called Healing Channel, with art direction handled by Esoe. The Global Swing catalogue has welcomed releases from Sweely, Madvilla, and Tino alongside Shrigley's own output. His debut on the imprint, "The Dirty Work" (GS001, 2022), set the label's tone squarely: hard-knocking, groove-forward house with a floor-first attitude. "Gary's Dreamland" (GS003) followed and drew enough demand to see a repress in early 2025.
He has also co-run the Night Sea Journey imprint with Colin Johnson, and founded the Stripped & Chewed label. Now based in Berlin, he continues to play regularly at Hoppetosse in the city, while maintaining his Chicago residency at Smart Bar.
