About this record
House heads attention - this is Holy Garage's Surprise (Remixes) on Eye Q's UK imprint from 1996, and it's exactly what deep house should sound like. Two mesmerizing remixes on each side that prove the label's knack for sourcing material that sits somewhere between hypnotic and tactile. The tracks drift and swell with that particular gravity of mid-90s UK deep house, where restraint and space matter as much as groove.
Eye Q's UK operation was a crucial conduit for the deeper end of the spectrum during this period - less about the peak-time bombast, more about the patient architecture of a proper deep house record. Holy Garage's Surprise fits that lineage perfectly, built for rooms where the DJ knows how to hold a vibe across several minutes.
A proper 12" that rewards close listening and rewards the dance floor in equal measure. The kind of record that doesn't announce itself, just gradually takes over.
