Two Halves, One Journey: LUMBAGO's Mix of Depth and Drive

LUMBAGO is the electronic music project of Maximilian Wilhelms, a Hannover-raised, Göttingen-based producer and DJ whose sound sits in the territory of progressive and deep house, built on driving basslines and rooted in the energy of 90s dance music. Before he ever touched a drum machine, Maxi was playing in orchestras and singing in opera choirs, a background that quietly informs the emotional weight he brings to his productions and DJ sets. He is a regular presence on floors across Germany and beyond, a member of the event-organising DJ trio HAUS^3, and a recent addition to the SEVEN family via the latest VA compilation.

Tell us about this mix: what mood or journey were you going for?

I split my mix in two parts. One part being more dreamy, more emotionally loaded, just something you listen to and get captivated. And the second part just pulls you in and gets you moving.

Where and how did you put it together?

In the days before recording I took a moment to select and arrange the tracks to fit the idea I wanted to follow.

Pick one track in here you cannot stop playing right now, and why.

Touch Absence by Lanark Artefax.

When and where should people listen to this?

I think you can listen to the set when you're getting ready for the club, on the subway to work, or at any moment you just want to escape your stressful surroundings. Just put your headphones on and join the journey.

What is your connection to SEVEN or to Berlin?

Since one of my tracks is on a SEVEN VA I somehow feel a bit part of that big sweet family. I have always felt very welcomed, and I stand behind everything they do and what they stand for.

Vinyl, CDJs, or both, and why?

CDJs, but every now and then I love to play a vinyl track.

What are you working on next?

I'm working on my next releases. And as HAUS^3 we are also working on our first release, maybe next year.

What is on your turntable at home right now?

One mixer and two vinyl players.

Press play, find a good pair of headphones, and let the two halves do their work. You can follow LUMBAGO on SoundCloud, Instagram, and Resident Advisor.
