Baby Ford is Peter Frank Adshead, a producer and DJ originally from Bolton who moved to London in the mid-80s. He is one of the founding figures of the UK acid house scene, and across the decades since he has moved from pioneering acid house through hard techno to the pared-back minimal techno he is best known for now.
His early work drew heavily on the late-80s acid house sound and the Chicago producers he loved, people like Marshall Jefferson, Ron Trent, Armando and Larry Heard. Much of it came out on Rhythm King, including "Oochy Koochy," often cited as the first British acid house record, alongside cuts like "Children of the Revolution" and "Fetish." His debut album "Fordtrax" became a staple for techno DJs, and later records like "Headphone Easyrider" showed a warmer, more listenable side.
Much of his later output has appeared through Trelik and Ifach, two well-regarded UK techno labels he has a hand in running, the first with Ian Loveday and the second with Mark Broom. He is also a natural collaborator, working with Thomas Melchior as Soul Capsule and Sunpeople among various other projects over the years.
For all the history, he has always kept the music first, to the point of being famously hard to pin down for an interview. His work still sounds forward-thinking, and he remains one of the more coherent and quietly influential voices in electronic music.
