SEVEN's new sublabel a.2aum is open for business, and it launches with Ground16 and his Breaking Through EP.
a.2aum is where SEVEN releases its more experimental side: ambient, broken rhythms and liquid, warm, texture-rich sounds built for the dancefloor and for listening at home. There is no better calling card for that remit than Breaking Through.
Swiss producer Ground16 joins the SEVEN family with a record that behaves like a Swiss Army Knife: highly versatile, with broken beats on the A-side and 4x4 on the flip. Drawing on house, jazz, funk, Detroit influences and breakbeat, he pairs meticulous rhythms with an exploratory edge, a sound already heard on labels such as Neo Violence and Sofa Movements and in rooms ranging from Berlin's Paloma Bar to the Montreux Jazz Festival.
The tracks
Eroded Mind opens the EP, a Detroit-leaning electro cut full of crisp drum work and modern sound design, with nods to Drexciya and resonant acid basslines. Breakin Through follows with a 90s breakbeat energy: acid stabs, chords and vocal fragments building into a serious floor heater. Endless Fight rounds out the originals, a rusty, jackin' slice of deep house for early mornings, driven by a pounding kick, high-resonance 303 squelches and Ground16's signature pads.
To close, Prague-based Pink Concrete flips Endless Fight into an uplifting techno remix, full of love with a hint of melancholia. Originally from Istanbul and now rooted in Prague's underground scene, he has already contributed to our parent label SEVEN, which makes him a natural fit to bookend a.2aum's first release.
The EP was mastered by Isabelle Schröer at Scape Mastering in Berlin. Ground16 also features on the main label's SEVENVA03 compilation, arriving in July.
Breaking Through is out now on vinyl and digital.
