CRYME Talks SEVEN, Safe Spaces and FLINTA* Futures in SNC Magazine

SEVEN co-founder CRYME is interviewed today by SNC in a piece titled “Helping Flinta flourish – A deep dive into SEVEN Records w/ CRYME”. The interview explores how SEVEN is building space for FLINTA* artists (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Transgender & Agender) in Berlin,. In the article CRYME discusses the challenges these artists face, and SEVEN’s role in offering support, representation and safer spaces.

SNC Magazine is a UK based magazine which focuses on supporting marginalised communities, especially in electronic and experimental music, with interviews, editorials and deep dives that centre social issues alongside music and culture.

CRYME talks about why he started the label: it wasn’t just for the music — though the music is central — but also to “create something that brings people together.” He explains how SEVEN is Queer & FLINTA* leaning label and what that means.

“I wanted to make a space where people could come together – so we are Queer & FLINTA* leaning but not exclusively, so all of our straight friends and allies and amazing producers can feel at home at SEVEN also.”

The piece also digs into institutional hurdles: from fewer role models to pervasive male gatekeeping, to the extra burden FLINTA* artists often carry of being more self-critical because of their very real experience of being over-criticised both online and offline.

“The biggest challenge is that music has been a man’s world for so long! … Because there are less women producing … the ones that are amazing … can be very busy and we have to work really hard to attract them to us as a label.”

On what’s coming up, CRYME is pretty fired up: SEVEN is moving into a new office in Torstraße, Berlin this Autumn, opening a record store, and planning releases including a remix EP of his track London Boy with artists like MCR-T, Roza Terenzi, JakoJako and Stef de Haan. Also next summer there’s a whole VA (Various Artists) LP curated by Cinthie composed of exclusively FLINTA* artists.
