BUTZ is a Berlin-based queer DJ who lives in the space between mid-90s club energy and the forward pull of contemporary electronic music. Her sets are playful and full of momentum, drawing on nostalgia without getting stuck in it. This mix is her latest dispatch from that crossroads, and it arrived the best possible way: spontaneously, from a stack of records on her bed.
Tell us about this mix: what mood or journey were you going for?
I honestly just wanted to put together all the last records I bought and see where it takes me. No specific thought behind it, just curious to see where it goes and flows.
Where and how did you put it together?
Honestly, at home in bed. I recently spent way too much money on records, so I love throwing a stack on the bed, digging through them, and rediscovering tracks I'd completely forgotten about. Finding a hidden gem you don't even remember buying is one of the best feelings.
Pick one track in here you cannot stop playing right now, and why.
One record I've been loving and playing obsessively recently is "Get Down" by Sambo on Cecille Records (also in the mix). I don't know, I just love the energy and it just works, if you know what I mean?
What is your connection to SEVEN or to Berlin?
To SEVEN? Family by now. To Berlin? Chosen home.
A record that changed everything for you?
Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat, the 12" nine-minute extended version.
A guilty pleasure track you secretly love?
Memories by Kid Cudi. Don't tell anyone, haha.
