Sueño Latino
Sueño Latino is an Italian house group formed by Andrea Gemolotto, Riccardo Persi, Claudio Collino and Davide Rizzatti. The name translates from Spanish as "Latin Dream," which suits the project exactly: music built around warmth, atmosphere and a certain Balearic reverie that marked the late-80s Italian house scene.
They emerged in 1989 with their self-titled single, which became one of the defining records of its moment. Built around Manuel Göttsching's 1981 electronic album E2-E4, it layers lush vocals from Carolina Damas over a slow, luminous groove, with birdsong and cowbells giving it a distinctly tropical, open-air feel. It reached number one in several European countries and spread quickly through the Balearic and rave circuits, and it has stayed in circulation ever since. A later Winter Version even brought Göttsching himself into the studio to add live guitar, deepening the link between the two projects.
The original appeared on DFC, the Italian label home to a number of the era's Balearic touchstones, and remixes followed across the decade that came after. The most significant is Derrick May's "Illusion First Mix," which grafts his Detroit-forged tribal drive onto the original's euphoric haze, with later versions from Bushwacka and Express of Sound.
The group released a second Balearic cut, "Luxuria," also featuring Carolina Damas, and though their output slowed through the 90s and beyond, that first single's reach has only widened, finding new listeners with each new generation of house and Balearic collectors.
