Scan 7
Based in Detroit, USA
Scan 7 first played FOLD in London in 2019, then both floors at Tresor in Berlin in 2023.
Scan 7 is a Detroit techno collective founded in the late 1980s and led by producer Trackmasta Lou, whose real name is Leslie Jerome Robinson.
The group operates with regularly changing lineup of masked musicians and vocalists, with Trackmasta Lou as the sole constant founding member. The collective also includes DJ Red Line, alongside a wider circle that has at various points included Anthony Horton, Kris Harris, Mr. Hooper, One of 7, and Vernell Shelton.
The name itself is rooted in Detroit: the word "Detroit" contains seven letters, and the city's area code, 313, adds up to seven. Scan 7 first broke out in the mid-1990s with a series of jacking machine funk 12"s, releasing on Underground Resistance and establishing a sound built on the militant, hardware-driven techno that defined that label's output. Robinson debuted under the aliases Xzile and Black Man on Tresor's 313 compilation, before releasing three EPs on the Berlin label: "Dark Territory," "Beyond Sound," and "Resurfaced."
Away from the harder end of Scan 7's output, Trackmasta Lou has also worked in deepish house, including the collaborative project Separate Minds with fellow Detroit producers Marc Kinchen and Terrence Parker. Their sound is constantly evolving, echoing the techno of their hometown and then mutating, seemingly at will, from electro to uplifting house or any number of other subgenres. In 2000, they premiered Scan 7: Live at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival, a performance that helped solidify their reputation as a top-level live electronic act.
Their most recent album before a long hiatus was the 1999 Tresor record "Resurfaced." After two decades away from the long-player format, Scan 7 returned with "Between Worlds," a triple album released via Deeptrax Records in 2019.
The record moves across Metroplex-reminiscent electro, banging techno, deeper Detroit house, and galaxian jazzy vibes. Alongside that album, Scan 7 remained active with EPs on Solar One Music and Transmat. Since 2021, the collective has also operated its own imprint, Scan Records, which has released a various-artists EP featuring Aux 88, Scott Avery, and others.
Most recently, Tresor announced a reissue of Scan 7's debut album "Dark Territory," made available digitally for the first time in November 2024 - a fitting acknowledgement of a record that, nearly thirty years on, still sounds like a blueprint for Detroit techno at its most purposeful.
