AKA Urban CC

Obscure Shape is the alias of Luigi Urban, a producer and DJ originally from Brazil who is based in Pforzheim, Germany. He works across techno, drawing on the energy of the 00s rave and club era, and weaving in strands of Detroit techno, acid, EBM and old-school rave. The result is a dramatic, melodic-leaning form of techno: functional and driving on the floor, but with enough harmonic substance to distinguish it from brute-force minimalism.

His most significant and long-running partnership is with Marco Bläsi, who records as SHDW. The two met online in 2007 via a German chat room and discovered a shared vision for techno. The collaboration began formally in 2014, and SHDW & Obscure Shape quickly became one of the more distinctive duos to emerge from the southern German scene. In 2016, Groove Magazine named them "Newcomer of the Year", and that same year Radio Slave invited them to remix his track "Vision" for Rekids. Rekids' boss Radio Slave subsequently released their "Himmel und Erde" EP in 2017, and the duo have since also remixed his techno anthem "Grindhouse."

In 2014, they launched an event series, From Another Mind, and a label followed a year later. The label catalogue built steadily from there, with German-language titles like "Der Sturm," "Die Illusion," "Der Weg Des Kriegers" and "Vergessene Welt" forming a thematically cohesive body of work. After 9 years together the duo announced their split in 2023.

Obscure Shape has released as a solo artist on labels including Frenzy Recordings, where his "Reborn Identity EP" drew remixes from DJ Rush and Volpe, and on Mutual Rytm. His "Tsubasa" EP appeared on MTB, while the "Elemental EP" featured a collaboration with Parallx on label CRG.

As a solo producer, Urban uses hardware alongside software - his productions are rooted in the Sequential Prophet REV2 synthesiser among other instruments - and carry the same melodic weight and rhythmic directness that defines the duo material. The music connects most strongly to the continental techno tradition: unhurried, textured, and not particularly interested in current trends.

A friend of SEVEN for some time, Lui contributed a remix to the label's first release HOLD ON by CRYME, released as SEVEN7001.
